Happy New Year! It’s the time of year when everyone starts to come out what I like to call the “holiday coma” and start the process of eating better, organizing and – worst of all in my books – putting away all the holiday decorations until next year. I always make a comment after the holidays about how bare and empty my house looks once you remove the Christmas trees and the paraphernalia that surrounds it. While I normally do enjoy the sparse minimalist decor of my house, I also find that this is the perfect time of year to add in a few new things which will help negate the sense of emptiness that the decorations have left and have me refreshed to take on the new year in style. A refined, elegant style – of course!
This year, I knew exactly where I wanted to look to add some new pieces – a company called UncommonGoods. I had seen several of their products pop up in gift guides before the holidays, but I didn’t get a chance to really browse their site in much detail until it was too late… Procrastination at its finest. I was surprised to see when I did visit the site that not only did they have cute, unique ideas for gifts, home decor, birthday gifts and fashion, but that the company was actually all about something I believe very much in, sustainability. UncommonGoods not only believes in the green side of sustainability, either. They say : “To us, sustainability means more than just being “green.” We believe sustainability starts with integrity in everything we do, treating each individual inside and outside our company with dignity and respect, offering health insurance to all our full-time (and most part-time) team members and providing a fair wage to all.” Isn’t that cool? I love supporting companies with great values.
So when it came time to pick some new home décor options for 2017, I knew exactly where to turn.
Deep Sea Sand Art
I knew the minute I saw this that I would be hooked. The Deep Sea Sand Art is the modern take on the lava lamp in my books with the ephemeral sand-scape. All you have to do is rotate the glass ring and watch as delicate drifts of light and dark sand shift into deserts, mountains, clouds, rain, oceans and smoke, all ebbing and flowing into one another. There is an eternal yet fleeting quality about this interactive art, and the sparkling sand will mesmerize as it shapes a tiny world right before your eyes. Plus, it will be a stunning conversation piece in your living room.
Bedside Smartphone Vase
Every night, we all trudge to our beds with our smartphones in hand, plugging them in mindlessly and then falling fast asleep before your head hits the pillow. (Wait, is that just me?) One of my New Year’s resolutions is to make my nighttime bed routine more luxurious and this Bedside Smartphone Vase is the perfect way to accomplish that. Part smartphone dock, part vase, this bloom box functions as a convenient phone dock as it brightens up your bedside table. Plus, it works with all makes & models by simply threading your existing cords through. Perfection! I’m thinking lavender would be a perfect bedside option!
Mr. Owl Touch Lamp
I have always been a fan of mixing modern and vintage styles in my house, and when you can add a touch of whimsy without taking it over the top (definitely not refined) then the piece is a winner in my book. The Mr. Owl Touch Lamp is a vintage-inspired lamp featuring a watchful brass owl. More than just an endearing ornament, Mr. owl acts as the switch for the fixture; simply touch any part of it to toggle through three levels of brightness or turn the light off. The handcrafted wood base, porcelain socket, reproduction cloth-covered cord, and Edison filament bulb under a glass dome all contribute to the abundant vintage appeal of the piece.
There are so many options on UncommonGoods. I truly urge you to go try and check them out – I’m actually planning on using it for some gift ideas coming up… And maybe the Bagel & Cream Cheese Making Kit is meant as an anniversary gift for me from my husband later this month? 😉
