After the success of looking at my last style icon, I thought I would share one of the newest style icons : Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau. Never heard of her before? I don’t blame you – she’s new to the international scene; here’s a bit of background for my non-Canadian friends. Last fall, Canada elected a new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and with his ascent to power came his self-declared advocate for Canadian style wife, Sophie.
Here’s why I like her style.
She is Down-to-Earth and Approachable
Take a look at the image above, from a recent Chatelaine magazine photo shoot. The Prime Minister’s wife is casually dressed, wearing a blouse from Canadian retailer Aritzia and distressed boyfriend skinny jeans. It’s a refreshing to see a look that not only could I see myself wearing, but that showcases something the Refined Side has been talking about for years – even on the weekends or when you want to be casual, you can still look luxe. The turquoise jewelry is also a great touch for her colouring and personality.
How to Steal Sophie’s Style:
Casual elegance is a weekend style that is incredibly easy to incorporate into your own closet. Find a pair of jeans that are flattering, stylish and most importantly comfortable. Right now, the distressed “girlfriend” jean, as seen on Sophie above, are all the rage. Pair these with blouses that you might even wear to the boardroom during the week – or if you have kids like Sophie (and I) do, you can look at some cheaper alternatives to silk so that you’re not afraid of getting juice boxes/cookies/Goldfish crackers smeared into your silks. I personally save the silk for when I’m in the office – or having company – and use lightweight washable alternatives for when I’m running around with the kids.
She Embraces Neutrals
Sophie is rocking grey boots, jeans, sweater and turtleneck and yet with her bright hair, personality and jewelry selections, looks anything but neutral or boring. She’s seen here with her kids too, making this a look that moms can incorporate into their everyday looks.
How to Steal Sophie’s Style:
Pick a colour palette for your closet and stick to it. Sure, throw some colour in every now and again in accent pieces, but build the foundations of your wardrobe with solid classics in a gray, camel, black or navy base.
She’s A Real Woman Body Icon
Part of what I love about Sophie as a style icon is that she’s got a body that is realistic for women to achieve. She’s not stick thin – she’s healthy and has had three kids. Part of what is best about this look on her though is the confidence she pairs it with. Many women would throw sweaters, or blazers on top of a dress. Sophie embraces herself for who she is.
How to Steal Sophie’s Style:
Take a good, solid look at yourself in the mirror. Do it. Learn to love what you’re looking at and figure out what are the parts that you – and you alone – find the most attractive. Learn to accentuate those things.
She’s Embraced Her Curly Hair
Sure, this might just be me, curly haired girl admiring this one – but Sophie rarely feels the need to flatten out her natural wavy curls. She even pairs them with formal looks, which I admire as a professional woman who typically flat irons her hair in advance of big meetings.
How to Steal Sophie’s Style:
Learn to style your hair in its natural state! Take some time to ask a hairdresser next time you’re there – trust me, if you have curly hair, the hair dresser will likely love to show you how to style it curly rather than going through the effort of blowdrying it straight!
Get a Good – nay, Great – Coat
A good coat can go anywhere. A great coat can make international headlines and compare you to fashion icons. This coat from Canadian label Sentaler is one great example. It’s classic yet stylish and perfectly accentuates the poppy on Sophie’s coat – the real focus of the day.
How to Steal Sophie’s Style:
Invest in a great coat. Plain and simple, but easier said than done. This will be expensive and should be in a color that goes with the color palette you’ve selected for your overall wardrobe (see above). Pick one without details that will show the coat’s age (for example big buttons) and you will be wearing it for a lifetime.
White House State Dinner 2016
Tonight, Sophie and Justin will make their White House state dinner debut and I’m going to wager that we’re highly likely to see her in a Canadian designer. The money from the fashion community is on Erdem – but there is a lot of Canadian talent to choose from! Here are some of my favourite Erdem looks of the moment it would be fun to see Sophie wear:
