A few years ago, one of my girlfriends was getting romantic for the first time with a new man. She was feeling super sexy in a revealing little number she had purchased from Agent Provocateur and was ready for whatever adventures the night brought her way. She stripped out of her dress after a particularly romantic dinner and stood in front of said man who looked lustily confused. Yes, I say lustily confused like it’s a thing. Apparently it means when a man wants to jump your bones (do the kids still say that?) but something isn’t feeling right. Self-confidence shot, she looked at him for answers. We’ll assume the hormones had taken over his brain as he answered that the sexy little number she was wearing was in fact one his ex-wife had worn when trying to keep their relationship alive. Moment over. She packed up and went home, never to see the man again.
While hopefully this was something that only happened to my friend, it’s stuck with me. How many women in the world are wearing whatever is on the mannequin at Agent Provocateur/Victoria’s Secret? Sure, I could walk into Agent Provocateur tomorrow and walk out with a pair of new $85 panties. I could then walk across the street to the Victoria’s Secret and pick up a lingerie set to bring home. But I’d be looking like thousands of other women in the process. And when you’re stripped down to your most revealing, feeling like you could be compared to anyone else is not what you want.
It’s why I think the new luxury in lingerie is in the custom-made. It’s no longer just terrible memories of your grandmother trying to learn to sew underwear with elastic waistbands popping out (just me?) but it’s now a huge boutique industry where they will take your measurements and make the garments just for you. La vie en luxe for sure! I stumbled upon Ohhh Lulu Lingerie a few weeks ago when reading up on this new trend. Handmade by a stay-at-home mom in Ontario, the pieces are unique, one-of-a-kind and most importantly made to fit exactly your body.
Here are some of my favourites from the collection (all images are from OhhhLulu):
This is just one example of someone making custom lingerie – there are hundreds more out there. I think it’s the ultimate in luxury when you purchase something made especially for you. You’ll feel great about it, look like a million bucks in it and will never have to worry about being compared with anyone else. Because we are all unique, different, and incomparable – just like our underpinnings can now be as well!
