What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up, like a raisin in the sun? Hopefully not. To defer means to delay, and hopefully our deferred dreams are only delayed for a short while.
Recently, a big dream of mine was deferred. Plans changed. Life reshifted a bit. The changes account for some radio silence and lack of creativity. Life handed me lemons, and I really really did not want lemonade. Or lemon merengue pie. Or anything to do with freaking lemons, can I please just have the limes that I wanted, thankyouverymuch?
Ugh. Apparently not. Lemons it is.
Sometimes, I think humans focus on their deferred dreams – the ones that got away – and neglect their dreams that came true. Two years ago, I boarded a plane for my first trip to London. Two years later, I’m packing for the exact same flight – this time, with my wonderful blessing of a British boyfriend to see our dear family and friends in the English countryside. That was a dream I never thought would come true.
But even though my life is wonderful – filled with life, love, friendship, success, and happiness – this week, I just want to crawl into bed with a cup of tea and a book. I want to hide from the world for a bit, and forget that life gave me lemons. I wish my deferred dream came true, but instead it was delayed, like a flight on a rainy day. Hopefully, the weather will clear and I’ll get where I want to go.
Over the next few days before our flight, I’m struggling with the lemons. Anyone for a gin fizz?
In other news this week…
What I’m Reading… SUPERFOODS by Julie Montagu
I love Julie Montagu, so I was so excited when her book came out for American readers (in American measurements! Huzzah!). I have been striving to eat healthier over the last few months, and this book was just the ticket. I’ll post a full review next week, but rest assured its a good one. Click here to preorder the book. I know you’ll love it!
What I’m Drinking… Harney & Sons Imperial Earl Grey
If I drink more tea, surely that will make autumn approach sooner?! I love this tea, as it has a strong bergamot flavor but equally strong black tea flavor. They compliment each other very well, whereas some earl grey teas are more akin to drinking boiled orange peel (too much orange, too weak tea).
What I’m Celebrating… My Birthday!
Yes, that’s right – my birthday is tomorrow, July 29. I’ll be celebrating in all sorts of ways, with dinners, lunches, date nights, a mid-week overnight getaway and a lazy afternoon by the pool.
