This weekend, the Englishman and I celebrated our first anniversary together (hooray!) with a two-day getaway at his family’s country house. The house has the most glorious pool, and we counted the days until we were lounging by the pristine blue waters.
I admit, I am a picky poolgoer I have some high standards for lazy pool afternoons. But my summertime pool essentials make me enjoy the event even more. Why go half-way, and only enjoy half of it? Investing some time, planning, and luxury into a summer afternoon makes any pool feel like a high-end resort.
First, we stick to private pools. Whether it is his family’s place, a friend’s backyard pool, or a private club, smaller, more exclusive pools make all the difference. For this reason, we aren’t at the pool twice a week; however, I know I wouldn’t enjoy a public or neighborhood pool nearly as much. The peace, quiet, and privacy is well worth the sacrifice.
Second, we bring books – and plan plenty of time to read them. Usually, we leave our phones in a cool, safe place (heat + water = impending doom for iPhones!) and we don’t use eReaders. Books – tangible, beautiful book! – are the way to go. I was reading The Apothecary’s Daughter by Julie Klassen and B was rereading The Empty Throne by Bernard Cornwell. Spending over an hour lounging around in the sun, reading books we love is the ultimate luxury for me.
Third, I accessorize. A cute bikini is a must, but I also brought a stylish Panama hat and my new Ray-Ban wayfarers. I wore my favorite pair of summery earrings (a gift from my friend, Christina) and didn’t skip makeup and hair – instead, I chose lightweight makeup with SPF and beachy waves. If paparazzi with a long-range lens snapped a picture, I wouldn’t be too devastated.
Fourth, I stay sun-healthy and sun-safe. I know I can lounge around for hours and enjoy the warm sun because I know I am being responsible. The hat and sunnies are a good start, but I also lather on sunscreen every 30-60 minutes. I keep a big water bottle nearby and snack on hydrating snacks, like watermelon. (Sometimes, we have breakfast or lunch by the pool, hence the muffins and tea in the picture!)
After these lazy, hazy, crazy days by the pool, I feel so relaxed and revived. It is an absolutely luxurious event to remember, and I put extra effort (finding a private pool, packing healthy snacks, selecting a fabulous pool) to make it extra enjoyable.

In other news this week…
What I’m Lathering… Molton Brown Blossoming Honeysuckle & White Tea
The Englishman got me this gift set as part of my anniversary gifts, and I love the scent! It is much richer than I expected, and it is a truly beautiful scent. We both remarked that we are smitten with Molton Brown – one bottle lasts us at least four months (mine usually last six!) and the fragrances are so gorgeous. Buy it here.
What I’m Waiting For… my Emma Bridgewater sale order!
Englishman and I are Emma Bridgewater obsessed! When we heard about their big sale, we placed a big order – nearly ten mugs! Luckily, we saved on shipping by sending them to his mum’s house. We’ll pick them up when we go to England in August. Until then, I am dreaming about the gorgeous pottery that awaits me!
