This Sunday, the Englishman and I are attending a birthday party for his 5-year-old cousin. Certainly not a Chuck-E-Cheese event, but rather a petting zoo and pony ride fete in the back yard of their 180 acre estate. In all honesty, I am thrilled. I thought the likes of these parties could not exist outside the hills of Los Angeles. I am looking forward to champagne cocktails and boutique cupcakes in the summery sunshine. It also provides me an opportunity to see my chickens, which are currently housed on the estate.
The trouble is … what do you get for a 5-year-old king?! He truly is the king of the castle – all his subjects bowing to his whims for an adorable cuddle or a cheeky grin. He’s a sweet little boy – perhaps a bit too mischievous – but I would be lying if I said I hadn’t fallen for his chubby little cheeks. What do you get for the little boy who has everything?
For Christmas, the Englishman and I got him every single Little Golden Book on Superheroes (a collection of 10 I believe) only to find that he had a copy of every single one. This time, I want a bit more creativity. I considered adopting a rhino from the World Wildlife Foundation, but would a five-year-old appreciate that?? I think not…
Another idea I had was to customize a book with his name in it, so he could be one of the characters! Alas, the ordering time was too long…
Now, my plan is to head to Target and rely on quantity, not quality. I KNOW! It is everything against my beliefs, but a coloring book, puzzle, and action figure go along way in the eyes of a five-year-old… wish me luck!
In other news from this week:
What I’m Reading… Tout Sweet by Karen Wheeler
A reformed fashion editor gives up the posh life of London and moves to a crumbling old house in France. I am obsessed with French memoirs, and this one is a great example. I love her reflections on the culture between her fellow Brit expatriates and the native French. She seems to have a wonderful time with the French, while the Brits are giving her nothing but trouble. Highly recommend!
What I’m Wearing… my “Princess Charlotte” necklace by Claudia Bradby
I received this as a gift to review on What Would Kate Do, and I am in love with it. I have worn it almost every day for two weeks! The sparkly chain can dress up a t-shirt while the delicate charm accents a frilly blouse.
What I’m Eating… fresh strawberries from the farmer’s market
I finally found a farmer’s market, albeit a small one, but the strawberries are worth the struggle. They are finally in season, reminding me that out-of-season strawberries simply aren’t worth it. The sweet, juicy, pink gems are one of my favorite signs of summer!
