Last week, I posed the question to myself and to our readers – do our books, TV shows, playlists, and everyday choices reflect our luxurious selves? Everyday, we wake up in the morning and make the choice to have a refined day. We want to fill our day with things that give us pleasure and help us lead a fulfilling, luxurious, happy life. Today, I want to reflect on what we read and how our books can enhance (or detract) un vie en luxe.
You may recall that I was reading a book on style when the author suddenly dropped a bomb – her idea of “style” was yoga pants and a white tank top. Since the book wasn’t all that great, and this idea horrified me, the book went back to the library tout suite. I am not sure how to describe it, but the book made me feel “icky.” It reminded me of the uphill battle of a refined lifestyle – most of the modern world thinks yoga pants and tank tops are appropriate attire, but I do not.
Back to books.
Do the books we read give us pleasure, inspire our refined lifestyle, and fill us with that warm, embracing feeling of luxury? Do they help us grow as people? Are they filling our wonderful brains with wonderful ideas?
Books we don’t like are not books worth reading. This is the easy part of the topic – if we don’t like it after a few chapters, or aren’t interested in it at all, why waste our precious moments of quiet reading and relaxing? Reading uninteresting or unappealing books is not exactly creating a pleasurable reading experience.
The next topic is the content of the books we read. I have been pondering this a lot this past week and have been asking myself plenty of questions on the subject. Does it matter what we read, as long as we are reading? Does it matter what we read, as long as it makes us happy? If I read a smutty fictional novel or a mechanical analysis of steamboat engines, is one more refined than the other?
I would LOVE your thoughts on the subject! How can we make reading more luxurious and refined? Or does it matter – is any amount of reading a wonderful asset to our daily refined lives?
