If you go to the dictionary and look up “luxury”, you’ll find several definitions. “The state of great comfort and extravagant living“, “a desirable item that is expensive or difficult to obtain” or “an indulgence in something that provides pleasure, satisfaction, or ease” are just three of the many definitions which exist. While we love these definitions, luxury, to us, means something that is inessential but conducive to pleasure and comfort. And it’s why we fundamentally believe that adding luxury to your everyday life is not only achievable, but it will greatly impact your overall happiness and well-being.
Keeping that in mind is how we’re approaching an updated Refined Side for 2015. We are going to continue covering the things that are considered luxuries or luxurious by most – things like fancy designer shoes, delicious foods and indulging our love of wanderlust. We will share our favourites things, we will cover events related to them and we will show you how you can add them to your life. They’re the things we will spend 2015 – and beyond – incorporating into the everyday. These will be covered in our upcoming Luxe List series, featuring of all the luxuries we can’t get enough of.
But looking back at our definition of luxury, and the goals of our site, we realized that we had not given enough credence to the things that were individually pleasurable or comforting. If we’re focusing on adding luxury to everyday life, we need to also take into account that while something might be a luxury to some, it would be a form of torture for others. As an example, while I find an afternoon at the spa to be pretty much the best thing on the planet, my mother-in-law would rather spend the afternoon weeding her garden and has re-gifted the numerous spa gift certificates we’ve given her over the years. She just plain and simple hates the spa.
In 2015, we will be defining and sharing the things that are luxuries to us – and helping you do the same through our new Luxe Love series. We’ll be showing you how to incorporate the things that give you immense pleasure into your everyday life to make your life more refined and luxurious- does that not sound like a great plan for the new year?
The most important thing to note – and the answer to the question we get asked the most – is that in our definition of luxury we don’t believe you need a lot of money (although we’re not going to lie and say it doesn’t help) to add luxury to your life. This means that the Refined Side everyday luxury is available to everyone.
If you can’t wait for the new series to get underway, you always can see all the things that are inspiring us on our Pinterest boards.
So welcome to 2015, and welcome to living your life with more luxury – everyday!
