Surely you have heard that we love autumn, and eagerly await its arrival. We start buying sweaters in May, and the hunt for this year’s winter coat began in July. Today – on the first official day of autumn – I felt we must celebrate! Grab a scarf and a hot toddy. We’re celebrating autumn!
Take a walk through the leaves. Nothing says “autumn” like the leaves falling from the trees, covering the ground in a stunning blanket. Find a wooded area without a path and go for a walk. Listen to the crunch beneath your feet and feel the wind turn your cheeks rosy. Isn’t it wonderful?!
Test out seasonal cocktails. Not that we need an excuse for this… but I recently read a recipe for an alcoholic cinnamon cappuccino that was to.die.for. Hot toddies are a classic favorite, and pumpkin martinis are on the rise. Remember to drink responsibly – and invite me over!
Visit a local farm. Perhaps you can go apple picking and make homemade apple pies, or simple wander around the vast farmlands and see the cows and sheep. Most farms have fantastic farm shops with local produce, baked goods, and jams. Plus, this is a great excuse to wear your wellies.
Find a seasonal cookbook and read the recipes. I like Pippa Middleton’s Celebrate, but there are tons of seasonal cookbooks and blogs out there. Read up on some recipes you might like to try now that the weather has cooled. I am dying to make some pumpkin squash soup!
Read the September issues. Even though they come out in August, the September magazine issues of Vogue, Glamour, and Marie Claire (among others) are massive feats of the publishing industry. Set aside an afternoon (perhaps in the bath?!) to flip through a thousand glossy pages.
Decorate a Posh Pumpkin. Think refined and glamorous – like gold glitter, black rhinestones, or maybe some accessories! If you’re truly skilled, you could try and make a quilted Chanel-style pumpkin. Or perhaps an Hermes pumpkin! The possibilities are endless!
Practice your photography skills. Whether on iPhone or DSLR, Autumn is a beautiful model. The changing colors in the trees, pumpkins on doorsteps, and warm-weather outfits make for perfect subjects. Snap away, practice editing, and show us your gorgeous photos!
Bring a book and a blanket outside. Sit on your leaf-covered lawn or under a tree in the park. Some books feel like autumn to me – like Bridget Jones’ Diary, Confessions of a Shopaholic, or The Thorn Birds. I might only sit out for 15 minutes, but it is such a special way to spend time.
Plan an outdoor picnic. But not just a regular old picnic – think mini champagne bottles, truffle risotto, and macarons. Be creative and enjoy a fancy picnic in the crisp air. Planning something exciting and out of the norm – such as a four-course meal at a local park – turns a normal afternoon into a refined event.
Write thank you notes. In America, we celebrate Thanksgiving in November. How sweet would it be to receive a thank you note in the mail, thanking you for your friendship? Think of why you are so grateful for your family and friends and tell them in writing. This would be a great tradition, and a fabulous way to use up those adorable notecards.
