Lately, I’ve been finding myself out in the woods more than ever before. From picnics to hikes to walking trails, I am experiencing nature. Well, as much of nature as you can get within 30 miles of Washington, D.C. And since we are in Virginia, it is hot – some days, it reaches about 90 degrees of humid, sweaty, muddy nature.
Great Falls Park – a favorite hiking spot
Surprisingly, I love it. I love the views, the trails, the little baby deer and the butterflies. I love the company, the flowers, and the puddles you can jump in. Most of all, I love the outfits.
Did you know that when you go out into nature, you need a special outfit? In true Lorelai Gilmore spirit, anything that requires a new outfit is worth trying. So I asked myself – what do you wear on a summer hike? A refined girl would never throw on a ratty t-shirt and cut off shorts – never, ever. This question required some thought. Well, here are my answers:
A casual picnic
For a casual picnic in a remote location, you can be a little impractical. There isn’t too much walking or effort involved, so the right shoes should be enough seriousness. A pretty dress – like this one – or even jeans and a pretty blouse paired with sensible wellies makes for a fun outfit. I loved wearing this! I felt frivolous but the wellies served their purpose and the dress was breezy and comfortable.
A nature trail
For something low-impact, but long-term, I went back to the trusty wellies. Every girl should invest in a good pair in a brand like Le Chameau or Aigle. Shorts that can get muddy and a lightweight cotton shirt will be comfortable, practical and cute. Worried about sweaty calves? Wear a cute patterned pair of knee-high socks in 100% cotton.
A serious hike
Tough trails usually lead to the best views and experiences. This is a great time to break out that Stella McCartney for Adidas top you spent $200 and never wear. I love love love fancy workout clothes. I just don’t feel myself in sporty pieces – instead I choose bold patterns, sexy cutouts and exciting designs. Don’t forget to stay hydrated!!
The cutest outfit will be thwarted by sticky make up. All summer long, choose simple make up. BB cream with SPF, waterproof mascara, and lip gloss with SPF should be all you need. To avoid the perils of humidity, experiment with braids, updos, and fancy ponytails.
