Before my wedding, I did pretty much the same thing as women across the globe: I got my hair coloured and deep conditioned. I was waxed and groomed to within an inch of my life. I stopped eating refined carbs and sugars and exercised several times daily.
I might have also taken it a little further than most as I also went to my dentist and had my teeth professionally Zoom whitened. I went to the dentist one morning about three weeks before the wedding and agreed to meet a friend for lunch afterwards which was only about a 5-10 minute walk away from my dentist. The dentist mentioned that I may have some sensitivity after the procedure, but it would go away after a few days, but as I didn’t feel anything in the office itself I didn’t think there would be a problem. As I opened the door to leave the dentist office after paying the several hundred dollar bill – not covered under insurance, I discovered that my teeth were so sensitive to the ever so faint breeze that I couldn’t open my mouth. I walked to the restaurant with my mouth sealed shut and met my friend there wincing every time I had to open my mouth. The salad was cold and sent shivers from my teeth down to my spine, the soup was too hot on my poor sensitive teeth. The bread was too chewy and caused pain when I inhaled. Sure, I had beautiful white teeth but it took about a week for me to be able to get back to eating and breathing without pain. Helpful for the wedding diet – not so great for practical reality.
A smile can go a very long way in enhancing your overall appearance – and is arguably the cheapest way to brighten your overall appearance. Nothing makes a difference like a smile! In my opinion, there are very few things you can do, dollar for dollar, than sharing a big smile – and if you have poor teeth than to have them remedied – that have a larger impact on your overall appearance. There’s a reason why many celebrities spend tens of thousands of dollars on new teeth as soon as they are able.
But we’re assuming that you don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on new teeth – or that you don’t want to go that route. There are all kinds of things you can do to improve your smile with a simple visit to the drugstore for a whitening toothpaste, pack of dental floss or even a Sonicpulse toothbrush. As with most things in life, you can also get it without leaving your house with services like Smile Brilliant who will send you an at-home teeth whitening kit for under $40.
When Christine and I were approached by the people at Smile Brilliant to test out their LED Teeth Whitening system I was more than hesitant given my past teeth whitening experience. It was asking me to aim more bright light and risk potential teeth sensitivity – and the product costs under $40. How on earth was this supposed to be any better than the dentist procedure?
Since I’ve been married now for several years and I very much like red wine, my teeth are no longer as white as they were post-wedding. So I figured it was probably time to get them back to tip-top white shade, right? The reviews were all positive and after speaking with their consultants about my hesitations and concerns, I was feeling reassured in giving the product a try.
The Smile Brilliant system came in a teeny tiny package in the mail. Where was all the teeth whitening going to come from? Luckily, they’ve perfected their system to be a small and portable package – would be great for travelling as well as being very compact and easy to store in my bathroom. After some very easy instructions and guidelines on how to set up the device (the images at left will give you the extent of the difficulty!) I was set up in no time at all to start the whitening process. Let the whitening begin!
I put the gel on my teeth (took a lot of turns to get the gel flowing, way more than the 40 it tells you on the package, so just keep turning!) and put in the lip guard and then took out the miniature LED light. I sat down and then realized the only downside of this product – you have to manually hold the little light on your teeth for the duration of the procedure. They recommend the light on the teeth for 20-40 minutes and then the lip guards staying in for 1-3 hours. Because you need to hold the light up to your teeth, you are going to need to have a good TV show or movie to watch while you sit and let the magic light work.
The good news? After a 45 minute procedure my teeth were noticeably whiter. So much so that I forgot the 45 minute holding the little white light and now pull out the little device whenever I need a quick pick-me up and have a good TV show to watch – and those stars align more often than I choose to admit.
So if you’re looking for an easy, quick – and affordable – way to brighten your teeth then I would strongly recommend checking out Smile Brilliant. Their small kit comes in the mail very quickly and you’ll be on your way – for under $40. I have been using it on and off for a month and a half and have had no sensitivity and there is still gel coming out of the tube.
