With the weather gently warming (lets not jinx it!) my toes are ready for their summer premiere. While I was pondering dark red versus lavender lacquer, I came upon the existential question: are flip flops fashionable?
Flip flops are a modern invention, entering mainstream fashion around the 1990s and catapulting into extreme popularity in more recent years. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t own a pair of flip flops.
They are mainly functional – nothing is easier than slipping on a pair of flip flops during warmer months. Sometimes, they have sparkly straps or a fun design, but generally they are unexciting. They are also not beneficial to our health; studies show that wearing flip flops are harmful to our posture and our arches, among other physical issues.
But what about fashionable? Fashion, which generally follows neither function nor health concerns, is about looking cute. Its about portraying your body in the most flattering ways – lengthen your legs, cinch your waist, show off your shoulders. I know for a fact (and you should, too) that any kind of foam or plastic flip flop was no where near fashionable. But then I spotted a cute pair of flippy floppies in the SJP shoe line.
They are so nonfunctional – the suede straps would keep them far away from any water. They offer no arch support. And while the bold blue color, luxurious materials, and simple shape were cute, were they fashionable? Would a refined girl wear flip flops?
The verdict? No, they aren’t. There isn’t a single outfit that would benefit from a pair of flip flops instead of a pair of flats, a cute espadrille wedge, or a gladiator sandals. There are so many better options for shoes! And as women, we must find them and love them. I’ll be tossing out my flip flops and investing in a cute sandal. Will you?
