Many women, myself included, regard one sacred ritual with the utmost reverence – the bubble bath. We imagine a luxurious clawfoot tub, or a deep whirlpool overlooking a scenic window, filled with bubbles and oils, surrounded by glimmering candles, as soft music plays in the background
and Bradley Cooper joins us.
We imagine this luxurious, bubble filled experience where our entire bodies are immersed in consistently warm water. Our hair tousles down our shoulders. This image is our most goddess-ly self. We are absolute Venuses in the bathtub. Its magic. Something about the bubbles.
I regret to inform you that most of our bathrooms look nothing like this, and never will. (Sorry, Bradley) The most lavish homes and hotels and villas still have a rather average bathroom. But with the new year, and our mindset of refining for better, my average bathroom wouldn’t do.
Sure, it was rather spacious. I have a rain shower head and a bath, plenty of granite counter space, and no one to hog the medicine cabinet. But it still felt tres blah. Your bathroom might look similar to mine, with basic amenities and no claw feet. Yet I feel it can still feel lavish and refined. We can still have baths where we feel like goddesses. Bradley Cooper might even show up.
The first thing you need to do, if you haven’t already, is upgrade your appliances. You can even buy these online and install most of them yourself. Pick up darling faucet knobs, a rain shower head, and a glamorous mirror. These small changes will make a major impact on the small space.
If you already have fabulous faucet knobs and a rain shower head, then the next step is to decorate. What is your vision of opulence in the bathtub? Is it the claw foot tub, or the basic overlooking the mountains? Perhaps its an open air shower in the Caribbean. Maybe its the crisp, cleanliness of a health spa. Choose your decor based on this vision. Experiment with your shower curtain, a floor mat, your toothbrush holder, and artwork to achieve your vision. The only exception is the towels – always choose white, and always keep them crisp.
The most effective way to make your bathroom feel luxurious is to fill it with luxurious things. These are the products you are slathering on your body, massaging into your skin, and cleansing all over. You cannot skimp on these products – only the highest quality will do. For your face and hair, search relentlessly for the perfect combination. Do not stop until you have baby skin. For your body, return to your vision of opulence. Caribbean escape? Tropical scents. French chateau with a claw foot? Vanilla. Picture yourself in that perfect tub – what do you smell? Find body wash, bath oils, lotions, and even candles with this essence and fill your bathroom with the scent.
Even if you have a small bath in a small bathroom, when you are surrounded by adorable faucet knobs, a painting overlooking the mountains, deep, sensual bath oils, and a white, fluffy towel, you’d be surprised how quickly you fade from your apartment and into Aphrodite atop Mount Olympus.
