I remember when I was much younger and flared jeans were all the rage. It was all about the flare in a medium wash with butterfly appliques. A friend told me that one of her much older sisters couldn’t wait for the skinny legged pant to come back. “Yuck!!” I remember remarking. “No way! Bell bottoms are forever.”
Fast forward to today, as I sit in my skin-tight, 3% Lycra skinny jeans, I can laugh at my naivete. Trends, especially with denim, come and go so frequently we don’t even notice them. Lately, it is all about skin tight or straight leg. Last season, the biggest trend in denim was a bold print – damask, leopard or geometric. Before that, it was all about bold colors – bright red, minty green, golden yellow. As I look at the catwalks, the celebrities, and denim designer’s latest lines it is clear that the next big trend in denim is the lighter wash.
As soon as it dawned on me, I realized that this is a natural progression. While dark wash jeans were ultra-flattering and ultra-sleek and ultra-stylish, the washes started to get lighter and lighter. I thought this was because we were all washing our denim and the color was naturally fading. Actually, the designers were making them lighter. Faster than our dark wash could turn to medium wash, light wash was all the rage.
All this talk about wash reminds me to do some laundry.
Celebrities have already embraced this trend, from the uber stylish Sarah Jessica Parker, to the super glamorous Miranda Kerr, and the effortlessly California-girl Jennifer Lawrence. Whether its a cropped skinny, a slouchy boyfriend, or a basic straight leg, the light wash jean is making a fierce comeback – and these leading ladies are making them work!
To keep things simple, stick to one trend at a time. We LOVE these jeans with a black blazer, white t-shirt, and black pumps. Add a little edge with cat-eye glasses and a studded black bag.
