I’m trying to kick my Diet Coke habit, albeit rather unsuccessfully as I linger around vending machines and the pop aisle of stores long enough to talk myself into one more can more often than I care to admit.
When talking to a friend about this recently, he told me that in order to actually kick the habit I needed to stop thinking about the fact that I could never have another Diet Coke ever again and stop beating myself up if I wanted to have one occasionally. He said to me, straight-faced the following quote:
How genius is that? By completely focusing on the fact that I could never ever have one again, all I wanted to do was drink one. Now, knowing that I will drink them on occasion has made it infinitely easier and I’m happy to report I’ve not had one in a week (used to have 2-3/day so this is big for me) and because it’s not something I can never have, I don’t obsess over it and fail the way I used to. Easily transferrable to pretty much everything else in life as well.
A great quote from a wise friend!
